A Ride to Benefit

August 22, 2021

Another swell ride from yer old pal Glen

First, pick a ride category.

VITAL! The KIDS category is ONLY for kids. (Duh!)

Special Deals for Members of Transportation Alternatives

(Or join Transportation Alternatives now and save immediately!)

This ride benefits Transportation Alternatives, the local advocacy organization that works to keep NYC streets safer for cyclists every day.

There are two great ways to save right now on your ride registration:

1. Already a member of Transportation Alternatives? You should have received an email from TA with a special password to save you $10 off of the price of your ride. Just enter that password near the end of this registration form where you see the Coupon Code box. (Can't find your TA coupon code right now?  Sign up at the regular price. Email us within 10 days of your registration with your coupon code and we'll refund $10 to you.)

2. Not a member of Transportation Alternatives? You can join now! Your annual membership of just $25 helps make cycling safer AND we'll automatically subtract $10 from your ride fee.

Please be SURE to tell us right here your apartment number, business name, or floor number if appropriate. We can NOT guarantee delivery without this information! (The post office has become extra-cranky on this topic recently -- even if there are only two apartments in your building, they are insisting on an apartment number or they will return your stuff to us).

We ask for your phone number only to reach you in case of a real problem.

Tell Us About Your Ride!

The truth is that on ride day you can pick any start line and any distance -- no need to let us know -- but telling us in advance what you THINK you want to do helps us plan a better ride for you.

Department of Insane Trivia: here's an example of how route distances are calculated:

If you pick, say, the MANHATTAN Start Line/55 mile route you will start pedaling in Manhattan and finish in the exact same spot about 55 miles later.

If you pick the BROOKLYN Start Line/55 mile route you will start pedaling in Brooklyn and reach our Manhattan finish line in about 42 miles, where you can celebrate and grab some souvenir goodies. When you're ready, pedal another 13 miles back to Brooklyn, for a total of 55 miles. (Of course you can always grab the subway from Manhattan back to Brooklyn... )

Clear as mud?  You bet!

Same cool design as our racing jersey (above) but without the logos on the shoulders or collar.

Why do we charge for T-shirts?

1. We did a survey in February where we asked people which free goodies they would like the most at the ride.  High-end water bottles and custom racing socks were more popular than T-shirts... so we're giving you that stuff for FREE (see below) and you can buy a shirt if you want one.

2. We are T-shirt snobs. Our shirts are full color, high quality fabric... not like that cheesy "free shirt" you got at some ride with 35 sponsor logos on the back; useful only for cleaning the grease off your chain. So there then.

Want to order more than one T-shirt?  Easy!  Pick the size you want, add it to the cart, then go back and pick another T-shirt.

Hey, this ride benefits Transportation Alternatives. Instead of setting a big minimum fundraising goal, we kept it as low as we could. But if you can spare an extra donation, we'd sure appreciate it! Of course all of this money goes to Transportation Alternatives.

Welcome to the Department of Annoying & Vital Questions!

There's some important info that will make your day MUCH better and we want to be SURE you've read it. So hang in there and answer the next couple questions so we know we're good here.

Give Respect/Get Respect

We want the neighborhoods we ride through to welcome us back next year, and we want to keep each other safe on the road. That means no riding side-by-side when roadways are narrow. passing too close, or otherwise acting like a jerk.

If any of our many marshals spot you yelling at drivers, pounding on car hoods, or being disrespectful to the neighbors (whether you think it's justified or not...) we will not hesitate for a moment to grab you by the ear (or any other appendage we can reach) and yank you out of the ride IMMEDIATELY.  NO REFUNDS.

When we get closer to ride day we send out emails with all the stuff you need to know -- where to show up, when... The only problem is that we find that -- at best -- 70 percent of the riders actually read that stuff!

No problem-o! Everything you need to know is right here on the Quick Start section of our web site.

SO... raise your right hand and repeat after me:

"Being a smart and totally awesome person, I promise to either:

A) Read the emails when they get sent out (and make sure they're not in my spam filter).

B) Skip the emails but read the Quick Start guide.

C) Use my psychic powers to know what to do.

D) Not send an email to Glen at 1 a.m. on ride day with this subject line: URGENT -- WHAT TIME DO I SHOW UP? WHERE'S THE START LINE?

The End Is Near

We welcome faster cyclists and slower cyclists and everyone in between.

We can't keep the rest stops or the finish line open forever, intriguing as that idea sounds.

We give you PLENTY of time to get to each location, but we DO set closing times, which will be posted loud and clear on the route sheet we hand you on ride day.

Having said all of that, we always get furious emails after the ride: "I showed up at the third rest stop (two hours after the posted closing time) and there was no one there!"

Digital Route Files

Yup, we'll make the routes available in digital format for your bike-mounted Garmin or smartphone. (This is NOT necessary -- the route will be fully marked and there will be printed route sheets too, but some folks prefer the digital files.)

Those files won't be available until just before ride day.

Because our ace scouting crew will be out there right before the ride looking for unexpected road construction or detours.  Even I don't know the final route until they report back.

We'll email everyone right before ride day with all the info on how to get those digital files if you want them.

Credit Card Statement

When you get your credit card statement, the charge for this event will be listed as:

You must promise that you will not freak out when you see those words, call up Glen in a panic, screaming about credit card fraud, before saying, "Oh yeah... bicycle ride.. now I remember..."

I, the undersigned, have read the refund policy for the ride, which can be found on the All the Bad Things on One Page section of our web site, and agree to the refund policy's terms.
